Dear Colleagues,

Here is the second in an intermittent series of newsletters for network therapists, inspired by the course on outcomes of network therapy at the 1986 Ortho conference. I renew my offer to circulate people's news, views, and requests for information.

I have three additions to the mailing list. I had forgotten my belated invitation to colleagues in Sweden for the 1986 Ortho course. I had helped to train a group in Norra Botkyrka in 1980; since then the original group has dispersed into a set of several groups and individuals interested in network therapy practice. I have added the following to the mailing list:

Mr. Gunnar Forsberg(Social Worker), Ljusstoparbacken 28A, 11745 Stockholm

Dr. Allan Linner(Psychologist), St. Paulsgatan 35B III, 11 648 Stockholm

Dr. Geza Patkai(Psychiatrist), Botkyrka PBU, Box 38, 145 01 Norsborg

Social welfare states do indeed seem to be more receptive to network intervention than does the United States. My Swedish colleagues have produced a 340 page book, NATVERKSTERAPI, TEORI OCH PRAKTIK, by E. Bergerhed, M. Brendler, G. Forsberg, A. Hultkrantz-Jeppsson, J. Klefbeck, K. Marklund, L. Martensson, and J. Swaling, published in 1985 by Carlsson Bokforlag AB , Bredgrand 2 111 30 Stockholm. With no knowledge of Swedish and only a dim recollection of my college German, I have been tantalizing myself trying to decipher its contents. The book contains a story of the network study group and their achievements; conceptual material from social anthropological, psychological, and political perspectives; discussion of intervention methods; and discussion of mapping. It appears to be detailed and comprehensive. I have written to my colleagues asking for permission to explore its translation and publication in English; in the event that I get permission I would appreciate your help in linking up with an interested publisher. A group overlapping with the group which published NATVERKSTERAPI has produced a pamphlet in French and English, NETWORK WORK WITH MULTI-PROBLEM FAMILIES IN CRISIS, which describes a demonstration project in Alby, where a network project has been working in child social welfare. Their final report will be produced in 1987; already the number of compulsory care orders in Alby "is now by Swedish standards very low from previously being among the highest among Swedish municipalities." This pamphlet is produced by Botkyrka Socialforvaltning Informationskonsulenten, Box 510 S 14700 Tumba. I'm sorry that I don't know the price. Their telephone number is 046-753-61881.

I have enclosed a copy of my application to Ortho for another course at the next Ortho conference, scheduled in Washington March 25-29. I sent it in late under deadline pressure(after the deadline). I just listed the faculty for the 1986 course. I hope that you don't take offense for being included or excluded from the faculty list. Please let me know if you want to be included in the faculty. If so, please tell me briefly about your plans for presentation (This can range from being a pioneer/commentator to a practitioner reporting on a current project). I will mail out at least one more newsletter before the Ortho conference, so we all will have some sense of how the course will shape up.

Carolyn Attneave points out that the mailing list does not identify anyone by their current activity. If you want to be better known, please drop her a line or let me know; I will pass your information on through the newsletter.

Please send me your news, gossip, or comments. Thanks for your interest in network intervention.
